What kind of tool would I need for minor woodworking?
I want to start making picture frames. What tool would I need to cut designs into the wood?

- A saw
- Get a Router.
- Get a chisel set and sand paper. To finish, a stain and/or varnish.
- a router is ideally suited to cut designs in wood
- 1st. a miter cut saw, You can still get manual ones. Start small. If you like it get a router and bit assortment for design work.
- get a small palm router (bosch makes a good one) look for rpms of at least 24000. I live in Ontario and I can get one for about $100. Mind you, you router will be very frustrating if you don't get a good quality bit. Look for carbide. Porter Cable makes the best bits (my opinion) and I've tried too many! If you want to go on a slightly larger scale get a plunge router (at least 24000rpms) which will allow you to easily control depth changes in your cuts. These run anywhere from about $150 - $800. ( Mine is a porter cable plunge/fixed base which cost about $600 and its amazing) Good luck
- To cut the wood for the frames, you will want a mitersaw. For cutting designs into the wood, a router. Since picture frames are not large expanses of wood, a Dremel tool with the router attachment works well. Best for intricate designs. Small bits and ease of control.
- a chisel DUH
- You need a fine cut miter saw
- a router and varied bits....
