Anyone know, in construction or home woodworking, what a tool called a "spreader" is or does?

It is a metal bar with two "arms" and with a knob in the center to tighten or loosen the arms. What projects it it used for?

  1. A "spreader" is sort of like a clamp only the opposite. It pushes things apart, instead of pulling them together. Some of the Nicer bar clamps are reversible, so that they double as spreaders.
  2. It might be a tie bar. These are used to form an A frame in roofing supports such as conservatories or green houses, They hold two angled rafters from spreading out of position. DWD
