Which tool is best for woodworking?

I want to do some woodworking, but am unsure which tool is best for doing letters and other things of the same nature, I have talked to a couple people and have had mixed answers, so is a hand held jigsaw or a scroll saw better for what I am trying to accomplish? Thanks in Adavance!

  1. its got to be the almighty hammer!! ask any chippy any problems get the hammer and bash bash bash, any electritcian cant get the cables through the wall get the hammer and baash bash bash, such a versatile tool. for what you want id get a scroll saw better to be moving the timber about a fixed blade for accuracy
  2. A set of small chisels is the way to go.
  3. Scroll saw or ban saw i would go with the ban saw because it is more versatile
  4. I would use a scroll saw, smoother cuts, faster, and less tiring. I have seen some pretty intricate pieces done with a scroll saw. I think you would be much happier with one, a jig saw is good for rough cuts, but not for fine detail cuts.
  5. Scroll saw, all the way. The width of a jigsaw or bandsaw blade makes tight turns very difficult- though a bandsaw can handle thicker material than a scroll saw. You also have a lot more control with the flat table of a scroll or band saw than with a handheld jigsaw- you can use both hands to guide the material. I miss my scroll saw...
