Need help with space planning/furniture layout in my new home?
We are about to buy a new house and I want to figure out the best way to use the space (mainly on the ground floor). We have one room that will be a lounge, but then have a slight l-shaped space that needs to include a dining room table, but don't know how to arrange the furniture and what else could be put in that same room. I have read about some software you can download, but I was looking for something free ideally! Any ideas?

- Try envisioneer express. http://www.envisioneerexpress.com/ Once you have drawn your house you can wander around it and choose the best places for furniture etc
- I dont know If this will help....
- Fill a page with a grid of 1cm squares. Measure your room/s in mm. Divide each figure by 1000, each whole number will equal a square i.e. A room 3000 x 3000mm will equal 3 squares in length and 3 squares in height. Draw up each room on the sheet/s. Fill another with the same grid. Measure your furniture and draw them up. Cut the completed pieces of furniture out. Place them onto each room to see how big they are and where they will fit best. A few good design tips. Where are the services eg. if the sattelite / tv aerial socket is only in one corner - then thats where the tv has to go ( unless you have long extension pieces. TVs are difficult to see if a window is shining straight into them. If you are not sure how much space you need around a piece of furniture, use it and measure how much space you need to function &/or walk around it reasonably. Think of where your views are - do you want to look out of a window in the living room? Remember - you can't cheat space (unless you are a Time Lord)
- So i used to work at a furniture store where we specialized in in home designs. I would suggest you go to La-Z-Boy.com . They have a great site where you can type in the size of your room, ie den, living room, bedroom etc. You can add walls to make it shaped like an L, and you can put whatever furniture you want in. It is alot of fun. Also on this site you can play with fabrics on certain pieces so you can see what it will look like eventually. AND if you really like a specific LaZboy model you can put it in your room, and it is the exact size so you know if it will fit or not. You should know that LaZBoy has a lifetime warranty on the parts, and has a really good customer support, so it is a great buy. If you have any more questions on the furniture itself or the software that allows you to make your own room let me know. I am pretty sure it is located under "plan your room"
