What is meant by the swing size of a drill press?
Public Comments
- This refers to how much of the table the drill press head will cover for doing the work.
- I am sorry, but I disagree with "fastsaf". If you have the number of the swing size and the drill press available, measure from the post in the back that supports the head of the press, to the center of the chuck. I think you will find that the swing size and your measure will be very very similar. What the swing size refers to is how big of an item can you put in the drill press, turn it on and have it clear the support. Let's say your drill press has a swing size of 6 inches. That means that you can install a hole saw of up to 12 inches. A 12 inch hole saw would have a radius of 6 inches. I'll grant you "fastsaf" has given you an answer you can use and the measurement he is talking about is about the same but throat depth doesn't necessarily convert directly to swing size. There could be something limiting swing size that doesn't interfere with throat depth or the opposite can apply. A lathe also has a swing size and like the drill press it refers to how far the chuck is from the bed of the lathe.
