3. it really depends on what type of garden you are planning. For herbs use rich soil like compost or manure at the bottom and a thin layer of gardensoil on top. this will make the new roots establish quickly as they dig to reach the good compost beneath. For pollinated vegetables and fruit like squash, corn, blue berries, limes, cantelopes and soon, make sure you have some flowers that are bee magnets nearby. and have a plan for the numerous pests that seek to eat your reward. For butterfly gardens make sure that the area is not too windy and besides the numerous flowers that butterflys love be sure to include host plants for caterpillars like dill, parsley, butterfly weed (aka mexican milkweed),carrot, fennel, clover and soon. For all of the raised beds be sure to water on a good schedule and avoid frequent short waterings opting instead for sporatic heavy waterings so the water can reach the roots on the bottom and encourage deep root development. Whatever your plan, raised beds are great because the soil drains much better preventing rot and mold disease, as well as being very attractive. Good Luck, be good and grow
