Can I grow plants directly in compost? I'm planning a rooftop container garden and want to keep the weight of containers low. I want to know if I can grow plants directly in 100% compost without adding any soil or perhaps in high compost to soil ratio (say, 70:30)? Note, I'm talking about READY compost. Not decaying compost. One that has already gone through the process of decay and is ready to use.

How do you get the seeds out of sunflowers? I live in an English basement apartment.My parents are the landlords and they said I am free to have lawn decorations and a container garden as long as it stays by my front and back stairwell. Growing Tomatoes? I'm planning to use container gardening to grow tomatoes this summer. Do they have to be outside at a certain point to be pollinated? Or can I keep them inside in a sunny spot and have them grow fine?

I want to start an outdoor veggie garden (in containers) any advice? I have a strip of land in my back yard that I can use but it's all gravel and I'm a renter so I can't change the grounds... I plan on using containers/ large pots and planting veggies in the appropriate seasons. A different veggie in each one. I've never had my own garden and I'm very excited. Can you tell me about the best... soils, fertilizers, manures, and any other tips you care to share? I live in So. Oregon, so there is a lot of rain (40ish degrease) in the winter and a little snow (15-20 degrees), beautiful in the fall and spring (55-75 degrees), and pretty hot in the summers (90-105 degrees) on average. There is direct sunshine and also shaded areas that I can place my containers in, depending on the veggie. I am also very interested in starting a compost pile... please help me with advise on how to start, do's and don’ts, what made yours great, leading to rich soil. Small space gardening? I live in an semi urban area of my city, and I am interested in growing rather expensive plants in my own garden, I was planning almost all edible plants, and I want to grow them from heritage seeds. Container vegetable gardening. Help!!? I live in N-E Indiana and plan on growing a few vegetables (ie, beefsteak tomatoes, hot peppers etc.) in containers outside. I am thinking about using some Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix 16 Qt but am not sure how much I'll need as I am new to this. I have been informed that I should use 5 Gal containers for the tomatoes and 2 to 3 Gal for the peppers. They sale the potting mix that I'm wanting to use in 16 Qt bags. I guess what I want to know is how many bag's will it take to fill one 5 Gal container? Now I know that 16 Qt = 4 Gal but will one 16 Qt bag be enough per 5 Gal container? Repotting succulents...? I recently bought a few different types of succulents that I plan to arrange into a little container garden. I am having a hard time finding "cactus soil" in the area, and I was wondering what I could substitute. I live in Central Pennsylvania. Any ideas or tips?

This is how it manifests itself: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide my car needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mailbox earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first. But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my checkbook off the table, open it, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk, where I find the can of Coke that I had been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. I realize the Coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye-- they need to be watered. I set the Coke down on the counter, and I discover my reading glasses that I have been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water, and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I will be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it is on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I will water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: the driveway is flooded, the car STILL is not washed, the bills are not paid, there is a warm can of Coke STILL sitting on the counter, there is still only one check in my check book, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I am really baffled, because I know I was busy all day long, and I am really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I will try to get some help for it, but first I will just check my e-mail.

Canning information please!? Along with some friends, I am planting an organic garden. We plan for it to be huge. I am trying to find out some good information on the following: 1) Canning (how to, dangers, expense, good links, cheap ideas) 2) Extracting seeds from my plants, to plant them again in years to come. (Also storing ideas, good links, cheap ideas) 3) Drying, I plan on planting tons O beans. I'd like to know the best way to get them so I can store them in a container on my counter. How to compost? I don't compost now but with my plans for my fruit and veggie garden I think it might be time to start.... But I don't know how to! I'm thinking just to compost what we have left over from eating and what is getting old in the fridge.... BUT wouldn't it rot? How do I compost? What do I compost? What kind of container do I use? Do I mix my compost with soil? Would it be OK to mix my compost with the sand in my gardening beds now? I'm not using the sand to plant in so I don't think it would be good for composting. But seriously I more what to know if the food is going to rot and get all nasty with stuff like maggots. EWWWW. Any help would be nice :D I checked out the links a little so my addition to the questions is what about noodles, bread, nutritional yeast, what about seafood shells (crab and shrimp shells)... I read not to compost meat and bones...

Low Maintenance Compost Pile? I want to start a compost pile for my garden this spring. I am planning to have it on the ground (sandy soil) using pallets tied together. I am thinking I should make three sections, to have three years worth going. I have a lot of leaves to put in, and some kitchen veggie scraps, and then whatever I deadhead around the yard. Is this going to break down relatively fast (1 year?) here in northern WI? Is there a ratio or thickness I need to maintain when adding things to the pile? Should I put my leaves all in one pile as "extra" and use them to add to the "working" pile? Do I need to turn or stir the pile? And should I add worms to the pile at all, I read they should be red worms, not just earth worms, but will earth worms/fishing worms still help? Not looking to have a worm farm here, just wondering if throwing a container in would help. I don't want answers back that tell me to purchase bins/etc. I just want this to be cheap and easy - the way it's supposed to be! Th

What happened to all my plants? This is so disappointing! I bought 5 packages of seeds, tomato, cucumber, pepper, eggplant, watermelon put the seeds for Easter in some store bought containers and filled with premium dirt for flowers and plants. Water them every day and nothing happened! The seed envelope said they would start showing up in 7-10 day instead it's already more than 12 days? I dug some seeds up and they just look as I put them in, no signs of germination whatsoever. Coud it be because they were those cheap 25 cents seeds? I take my check book off the table, And see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, So I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, But first I need to push the Coke aside So that I don't accidentally knock it over.
