Where can I find good example images or plans for small to medium sized gardens? I'm looking to get my garden landscaped but I'm looking for ideas. It's about 20ft by 15ft and is just a rectangle of grass at the moment - where on the web can I find pictures and / or plans of gardens of this size? Thanks. :)

how can i make a garden in small space? my house has very little space around and no plants at all. i'm planning to make a small vegetable garden on the terrace and to plant some around. any suggestions to start with? [i'm not planning to consult a proffessional for that purpose]. how about the idea of planting medicinal plants in the pot. ANY idea is appreciated. I may be able to choose the appropriate one. thanks.
How to I till the land for my small garden? I am a first time gardener, and I'm really excited about starting my first real garden. I have a small (20x40 feet approx.) piece of land to cultivate, but I've never even used a tiller. I'm hoping someone can take me step-by-step as to what I need to do, from tilling to harvest. It's a big question, but I would really appreciate some good advice from an experienced gardener! I plan to grow mostly vegetables like onions, cucumbers, peppers, and some tomatoes and watermelons. Thank you in advance to all who answer! I'm on Spring Break, and I hope to get everything in order this week. Have a great one!
Can anyone suggest an edging for my small front garden? I have a very small front garden which is paved and open plan. At the moment I have flower tubs on it but children tend to play around there and because it's open plan they pick my flowers etc. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a cheap edging to put around the garden (it's a weird shape) just to discourage small children from playing on there, bearing in mind that it is paved and not soil. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks for answers so far. Can I just explain that I live in a quiet country village at the bottom of a cul-de-sac NOT a city/town/built up area. I don't remember saying I lived in a built up area. ???? Anyway, I am a primary school teacher so well used to dealing with kids. I am not averse to the children playing, just want to define my area a bit more. These are 2-4 year old children who really shouldn't be playing out on their own but because we live in such a quiet rural area their parents think they are safe. I just wanted to make it clear that we are not dealing with older children or an inner-city area here, just a little garden definition. Sorry for confusion.
How do I wire a small garden shed? I am thinking of using a 30 amp breaker with 12/3 wire underground in PVC conduit and making an entrance into the building and put a couole of 15A breakers from the lights and power tools. I plan on running 2 fluorescent 8 foot lights, and a small 110v AC unit plus a few receptacles for power tools. Any suggestions from the electrical crowd?
I am planning a small side business constructing garden sheds. ? The sheds will be built on site not delivered by a truck. I have also developed plans to convert these sheds into small cabins for hunting camps, retreats, etc. Are these products something you as a consumer would be interested in purchasing? Particularly the converted cabin idea. Or do you have ideas of how i can improve the shed to meet your needs. Thanks for your input, this will help greatly when final business plans are developed.

I just dug out a new small garden in my yard. What should I plant in it? I've already planned on tomatoes and onions since I use them a lot in cooking. I need help thinking of a 3rd veggie to plant- something that isn't common at the farmers market and doesn't take up a lot of room for growing. The bed is only 4 by 7. I already have herbs growing in a separate bed.

And I was planning of putting a small garden in my back yard. To grow Carrots, Tomatoes, Green & Red Peppers, Onions, and Bell Peppers. Is it too late to plant the garden if I do it next weekend? Great ideas for things to add to new soil/garden? I plan on building a small garden this Spring, and wanted to know what are some really good tips for helping my plants flourish? I want to plant some vegetables (carrots, radishes, tomatoes - nothing too complicated,) some herbs and some plants and flowers. I only know about egg shells. All advice welcome. It took forever for my herbs to grow last year, and most weren't large enough to be edible. My vines, however, flourished, but my flowers barely bloomed.
I plan to start a small vegetable garden soon? what soil is best? and...? I plan to start a small vegetable garden soon in my backyard. I live in central Florida, have plenty of sunshine and decent temps for plants. I will only be planting (a) watermelons (b) various peppers (c) various herbs and (d) cucumbers. What I need to know... (1) Is it alright to use packaged manure as your planting soil? It's relatively cheap (about 2.00 a bag) and I assume it does the job. Or do I have to buy the super expensive stuff that costs $9.00 a bag and has numerous growing agents and chemicals? (2) When should I fertilize and how often? What should I use for the fertilizer? (3) Is there anything I should know seeing how I'm a novice to this hobby? (4) should I attempt to plant some of the vegetable plants and herbs in the ground or in large planting pots?
How can I plant a herb and veggie garden in a small apartment? I have a small balcony. I want to plant useful and practical plants that take little maintenance. I've already got sage, chives, shallots and some mint seedlings sprouting. I've got tomato seeds, but I'm worried they might want to climb there's not much room. I'm planning on planting some chillies as well. What plants would be quite low maintenance but used alot in cooking? I'm after stuff I can use alot but still enjoy nurturing. Thanks ! I think garden was a bad word. It's more like little pot plants, but I can get large planters as well...so sorta like a garden...
Why am I having problems watering my vegetable garden? I planted a small vegetable garden and made little hills to transplant the plants into as instructed on the label. When I water the plants, it looks like the soil is absorbing the water and all looks good, but after I finish watering the plants I poke my finger in the soil and find that just below the surface the soil is bone dry. The leaves on the plants are starting to drop like they need water, so I rewater and again the soil below stays dry. When I was planning out the garden I tilled the soil, added the fertilizer and I did not compact the soil before planting...the soil waster broken up an loose. I'm not sure what to do. I'm in NE Florida and the soil is kinda sandy which is typical for here.

How can I make a small garden bench? I want to make my mom one of those small garden benches for her birthday. She saw one before and she loved it. Its made of all wood with (I think) wrought iron sides and legs. Its a very simple piece. Im not sure where or how to get the iron pieces though. I have searched online and all I can find is the bigger benches. What Im looking for is the type of bench that maybe children can sit on, mostly for decoration. Its about 4 feet long at most and maybe 3 feet high? If anybody has any ideas, plans, or sites where I can copy one from I'd really appreciate it! Thanks so much! Kinda like a small park bench. Im very crafty so I can do this, I just need more ideas. Thanks!

Will rusty tools used on my veggie garden give my customers tetanus? I had a small veggie garden last year, so this wasn't a problem as I used some small tools I purchased myself. This year, I plan to go pro, and came upon some old tools (spade, pitchfork, rake, etc) that were here from the previous owner of my house. Problem is, they're rusty. Can I use them safely, or should I scrap them and buy all new stuff? PS: I will be composting, too.

Small space gardening? I live in an semi urban area of my city, and I am interested in growing rather expensive plants in my own garden, I was planning almost all edible plants, and I want to grow them from heritage seeds. Starting a garden.. PLEASE Help!!!? I know there are a bunch of questions about starting a garden, and I've been doing research about it, but still need help. I just recently bought my old childhood home. When I was younger my mother had a small garden in the front yard; but now the garden is just grass. So in the early fall when I moved in I borded it, put black tarp down, and covered it with mulch (to kill the grass). So it's been there for about 5 months now. I want to plant some flowers there in the spring/summer. I was planning on going to my local flowershop, but I heard that there are "spring flowers" and "summer flowers". The spring ones wont last in the heat? I need to till the ground? and buy some soil? I'm new at these gardening stuff, but I'm about to pull my hair out! Any help would be great!!!

Are there any organic fertilizers on the market that perform well for small scale vegetable gardens? I am interested in nutitional veggies, not perfect looking tastless ones. I used a well know flower and veggie plant food last year (Miracle Grow) makes nice flowers. The fruit did not taste sweet and the skins were thick and tough. I have added more garden soil and composted manure this year but I want something more to boost the crop in quantity and taste. Any suggestions? Or should that be enough? I am looking for a home made organic fertilizer, any tried and true recipes? I am planning on sharing what ever grows with family and neighbors. so I am hoping for a bumper crop. I am growing lots of tomatos, cucumbers, some watermelon, carrots, yellow beans,radishes,chives,parsley..oh yes flowers lots. I wanted more but ran out of garden darn! weed, insect control on lawn near garden and shrubs? I have small lawn, about 3500 s.f. There are large trees that are the edge of woods in the back. I have a small raised vegetable garden in the middle of the lawn. I also have a few small blueberry and raspberry bushes amongst the lawn. I am using the scotts program. I am looking for some alternatives. Basically, after using step 2 weed control I noticed the bluberries look like they were damaged by it. I didnt spread it right at the base of them, but maybe gave them an 18" buffer. This wasnt enough. I am thinking that I may want to just spread turf builder by scotts for the lawn, and aplly seperate products for weed and insects. I will be applying grubex in the next few days. In mid july I plan on applying an insect control product. And would like to apply another weed application. What tips do people have on a weed application that won't harm the bushes and garden? What does everyone think?

Building additional sleeping accomodation in the garden? Hi, I have a medium sized garden that would easily fit the likes of a granny flat (basic living quarters consisting of 1 small bedroom, 1 small living room, 1 small kitchen and 1 small bathroom) on a single story. All of the planning regs I look at seem to say you can build up to 30m2 floor space as long as it doesn't contain sleeping accomodation. Is there any way around this as I have a relative who I would like to build this accomodation for so that they can have a bit of independance yet still receive support. Cheers JP
should i borrow more money to improve a very small bungalow in order to make a better profit when i sell it? it has a lovely big garden and i have planning permission but the builders quotes are coming to twice the budget i had!
Is a one bedroom flat to small for a dog? I live in a one bedroom flat, which although is one bedroom is fairly big and I have room enough for a dog to have its own bed etc in the lounge but it would be quiet for him/her. Im not aiming for a great dane or anything, a small scottie or something of that size. It has its own garden and I work within 10 mins of home so I plan to take it out at lunch etc would others feel that a dog would be happy or is this still unfair on the dog? Everyone who has answered thankyou, I feel I am doing the right thing in adopting a dog and my flat will be bigger enough for one who will get as much attention and love as I can give! The best answer has gone for the vote as I am chuffed with all the answers!

Resources for terracing a sloped backyard to put in a garden? My backyard has an inconvenient slope that directs water at my basement and is too steep to plant anything. On one side it currently has a 4' lumber retaining wall which is rotting. I'd like to replace it all with a series of smaller masonry retaining walls to improve drainage and allow for a vegetable and herb garden. Any idea on where to find resources to help me plan this venture out?
How do i plant a tree in my front garden.? And what is the best to choose from. My front yard is small and is just a plan lawn. Is there eny type of preping to be done before i plant a tree.
Rototiller; what size for a small person? I'm planning on buying a tiller. I was going to get a little $200 mini, but after thinking about it, I plan on starting new garden areas where grass is and also plan on cover crops in fall in vege garden (20 x 20 feet), so I think I need a regular size one. I'm looking at TroyBilt with 160cc Honda engine. I want a size that I can use, not have to wait for my husband. I'm 5 feet 4 inches and weight 112 pounds. So, what size tiller won't drag me around the yard and make me fight with it.? Will I really be able to use this with one hand as they show in pictures?

When should I plant herb seeds? I am a chef that is planning on starting a small herb garden at my hotel in Seattle. When would be the best time for me to plant my seeds to get maximum growth from my garden this year? Please help me!!!
Which grass is best for an attractive, environmentally conscious lawn? I'm planning to re-sod a small front yard in eastern Pennsylvania (18' X 28'.) I think I'm in zone 6, climate wise. I live in a historic district, where a traditional looking lawn or a completely landscaped garden is required. The yard faces northwest, and gets strong, full sunlight in the afternoon. I don't have much time for gardening, so I'm planning a small lawn surrounded by a low, evergreen hedge (small boxwoods unless I can find something more interesting.) The foundation plantings in front of my house are azaleas and shrub roses. I use all organic methods and no chemical fertilizers whenever possible. I'd prefer a lawn that doesn't have to be watered, once it's established, for environmental reasons. I use a rotary, hand-pushed lawnmower, so a finer textured grass would be preferred, if available. (The environmental factor is more important to me.)
How do I stop grass from growing? I have a Japanese rock garden (or Zen Garden) in my backyard. The plan was for it to be gravel with a small herb garden. But the grass that was originally there keeps popping up through all my defenses! I have tried weed-matting and poisons. Is there any other ideas behind keeping anything from growing?
First date repost Sneaking into an open garden.? Ok I really am interested in this girl. I live in a shitty town in michigan. Its kinda cold still but the stars should be out tomrrow unless it rains which scratches the whole idea. There is a small japanese garden with a gazeebo next to a lake. Its truly awesome spot. I am planning on taking her there tommrow. However I just realized that its locked but the fence isnt complete its a 30 sec walk to the opening once your in its not visible from the road. I planned on throwing a blanket down and seeing as im a chef I know food and wine and I plan on buying like five bottles of wine to taste with her and some cheese and crackers. While I throw on some john mayer in the background on my laptop for a little added light and sound. Oh and the garden is next to a lake. She already really likes me and she is super excited to go out on this date with me, she doesnt know where we are going and has probably never heard of the garden. Yea i probably shouldnt be in the garden but it will be late im not going to drink all the wine I just want her to try something new. no its not private property its city property. im in college and I do what I want, I can tell when I like someone from the second I meet them and I like her. I want to make this perfect so screw you lady.
having a small wedding and a quick brunch? My FI and I are thinking about having a very small morning wedding with just our parents, siblings, and our best friends (no more than 20 people tops) at a garden. Is it okay to do a quick brunch at a restaurant after the ceremony and then head to the airport for our honeymoon. We think it's too expensive to fly everyone down to the Caribbean for a destination wedding but more classy than doing it in a clerk's office. We are also planning to spurge more on pictures. Is that okay? We might decide on going to the honeymoon the day after the wedding. That way we can have plenty of time with family and plenty of time for ourselves before heading to the honeymoon.
Planting Advice? A neighbor has a small backyard garden and plans to scatter a bag of fertilizer over the garden to "help veges get started". What advice would you give them?

First water garden, filled up with rainwater...? This is my first water garden, I just dug a small pond and got the liner in. Well, of course it rained last night and now my pond is filled with muddy rainwater. It is less than 100 gallons, so pumping it out wouldn't be out of the question... just annoying. I wasn't planning on installing a filter since it is a smaller pond, just using a fountain to circulate and oxygenate the water. Planning on putting in plants and goldfish in a week or so. Is there any other options for removing the dirt from the water besides draining or getting a filter? I was also wondering if anyone knew of any good websites with info on caring for water gardens.

Looking for small things to do in Vancouver BC, like curling ice skating etc.? Hello, I am planning a trip to Vancouver BC. with my girlfriend and am looking for some small activities we could do. We are planning this 4 day 3 night trip around going to the aquarium, the capilano suspension bridge, the Dr. Sun Yat-sen (garden), and Grouse Mountain. We now are looking to make a list of smaller things we can do inbetween these bigger items. We really want to go curling but have no clue where we could do that at. Please tell me of some other things we can spend our time doing. No sporting events please, we have already planned to attend the Canucks game. So again we are looking for some smaller stuff we can do, go curling, visit parks, go up the vancouver lookout, checkout the coastline, things of that nature. Thanks! Oh we are going from Jan. 2nd through Jan 5th.
Know any locations I can have a very small (no frills) wedding in Dallas, TX for only about 10 to 12 guests? It will be in late September so it may still be hot (outdoor gazebo in shady park/garden area???)...or indoors in a very small, intimate (but tasteful and kind romantic) place. Most places, of course, will not do ceremonies for less than 50 people...need ideas!!!! Help!!! Plan to do the BIG WEDDING on our year anniversary so again, this is just to be a small, family only affair. In court is out of the question! I already have a pastor who will do the ceremony but I didn't want to use an entire church b/c of the small number of people. A garden-ish park sounds nice (need names if you have any in mind??) or small venues who allow that small number of people....a clubhouse or something? Does anyone know any that can be rented? Websites would be real helpful...I didn't want it in court (a little too informal) but I won't be wearing a huge gown or anything...a very nice dress, hair done....imagine simple but romantic. We don't want to spend much b/c that's for our year anniversary celebration.
Small animal put to sleep / euthanised? Ok, I just read this on another post and am feeling kinda upset. I have a pet mouse who has a tumour and for the moment it is not affecting him, he is still eating/drinking as normal and very active. The vet has given me the signs to look out for, and when he becomes poorly I will take him back and have him put to sleep. My question is how will this be done? I always thought when an animal is euthanised, an injection is given into the bloodstream which will slow, and eventually stop the heart. But now I read about small animals being given gas first as a sedative??? And that the injection is directly into the heart?? Other people then have said they were told to leave the room while this happened? I want to be there, and to hold my mouse, stroke him and cuddle him and talk to him until he has breathed his last. And I don't want him to be cremated, some people said they weren't allowed to take the body away? I plan to bury Lucky in my mums back garden when the time comes! Please can you help clear this up for me, what will the vet do? I am worried now, I still know it's for the best, I don't want him to suffer but would appreciate if you can help put my mind at rest. Thank you
Do neighbours with adjoining garden gates have acess rights? Our neighbour is a large high street bank, they have a small gate (historic) behind their property which joins our two gardens. Our Title Deeds don't show anyone at all having a right of access to our garden or property. But, as our garden has an easy access onto the main road, the bank have just got a new big wheelie bin and intend using this gate on an ongoing basis to put their bin on the main road via our garden. Can we remove this gate? and re-instate the wall that was there previously? Do we need to get planning permission to re-build the wall or remove the gate? I wouldn't mind but as it's a bank once they start using it I can see it becoming a regular access point for them and all their workmen, also they never even asked us if they could use it...but do they have rights to our ground as there is a historic gate there, even if they've not been using it up till now???
