In a woodworking business, would things like sandpaper and rags for wiping stains be considered Cost of Goods? I do the accounting for a woodworking business. I understand that materials such as wood and paint and the factory labor are costs of good sold. I am also pretty sure that the factory machinery and tools that we use are not necessarily costs of goods sold. For me, the gray area is the little things like sandpaper and the rags that we use to wipe on the stains. We go through a lot of these and it's a pretty big expense. I just want to make sure they are accounted for correctly.

Every year my son is scheduled for a shop class? Is this typical around the country? When I was in school (about 15 years ago) all kids (boys and girls) were scheduled for shop class in one semester and home economics in the other semester. This gave balance to our education; learning about things that may not be part of our social gender experience. I loved shop class! I learned how to use many woodworking tools I've never seen before. I loved learning how to spot weld and making useful things of both wood and metal.(art deco wall sconce, pegged shelf, step stool) I can only guess the experience for boys was similar in home economics (cooking, sewing, budgeting and recycling) Is it typical for schools to schedule kids for classes based on gender now? Sorry, but this seems a little @$$ backwards.

What is a good summer project for a 15 year old? I'm 15 years old, and a hip injury has stopped me from doing sports for awhile. I was looking at this site called instructables for something to do, but most of the things there could be completed in a day or two. I have quite a bit of technical knowledge[using tools, woodworking, engines, etc] and I was wondering what would be a good challenging project. It needs to be kind of hard, otherwise it's not fun. I was thinking about building one of those hovercrafts that go ten feet above the water, but I have no idea what that really requires. Let me know!

What is the need some have to give un-asked for advise? There are very brilliant people in here, you (some) are very smart. I woodwork, my garage is filled with woodworking tools & machines $30k invested. I also have a neighbor who have a small box of hand tools and can't drive a nail straight...yet this doesn't stop him from walking into my garage and giving me advise on everything I do. I usually ask him a few questions (over his head) and he say's he'll teach me later. My wife has an uncle that ask me very personal finanical questions (most I say I don't know) and then procedes to give my money advise BTW, he's a barber. Point is: why do so many people insist on giving advise to things they don't have a clue about. As a rule I never give advise unless I am asked...and then if I don't know (often) I point them to someone who does know (seems simple to me). It seems to be difficult for some to say "I don't know", ...what is this?

Can I use wood board pieces for block prints? I have a whole lot ( about 100 or so) various pieces of pine wood that was left over from a project at work. They are smooth soft pine, I was wondering if Ic an use these for block printing? I have heard of this, but I tried to print something and it came out looking rather strange, not smooth. I have only made prints with linoleum from the store , is there any different way to use wood for blocks? DO I need to sand it or something first? They are pretty smooth as it is. I would like to use this as it would be worlds cheaper than buying blocks... can I use my lino cutters on the wood or should I use woodworking tools exclusively? Any advice on making blocks with wood would be appreciated. Know any good sites? Thank you so much!
working with aluminum angle? I have a piece of aluminum angle, 1/8 thick x 1 ½ x 1 ½ (about 24 in long). I need the angle to be exactly 90 degrees; it’s probably 92 or 93 degrees now. woodworking: a gift? So, I had originally decided to start my boyfriend on a nice toolset. Now, i've delved a bit deeper only to discover that what he is actually interested in is woodworking. He wants to be able to build, and put fancy details on, things like tables, chairs, shelves... the like. We both live in apartments until we're married, and neither of us have a garage or anything, so my set for him needs to start small. What is a great first tool or several tools that every woodworker should have? What will prove to be the most useful, and what should I avoid? I've already got a gift for him for Christmas this year, but our anniversary is coming up, as is valentines day, as is his birthday... so many ideas would be great! Please tell me specifically what to look for, how much it should cost, what the best/worst brand is, and where i can go to get it (i'm in michigan... we have home depot, lowes... and...i think thats it). thanks guys!
newbie woodworking guy needs help choosing a router? hi all, I'm getting into woodworking..thought it would be cool to get a router...not sure about some things.. 1. what is a good brand?..what is pure junk? 2. how much house power do I need for the average guy doing weekend projects..does more HP equate being able to do harder woods or does it mean that job will go that much faster? 3.I seen routers range from 69 to 199 dollars at the home depot...not sure if I want to invest tons of $$$ right now..could I get by with the 69 $ one or would I just be throwing my money away in the future? 4. finally my friend suggested that I look at pawn shops..might be a deal..most sell tools etc..just curious if you'd purchase one from a pawn shop..or do you think by that time someone really used and abused the router..not worth my time looking.. sorta like buying someone's used truck..one has no idea that they've been hauling or how they abused it etc.. thanks for your opinion Leo
Opinion on Hobbies (Woodworking vs. Sewing)? I am thinking about taking up a new hobby. I enjoy creating things (especially useful things for the home,) and have more skill fallowing procedures than having to create without using guidelines or tools. I was wondering if anyone had any hobby suggestions. I have been seriously considering sewing and woodworking, and would like anyone’s opinion on the two hobbies, their costs, how easy it is to learn, how useful the hobbies is, how easy it is to find instruction in the hobby, and any other details you think useful. Thank you very, very much for your time and help.

Air compressor needed? I allready have a huge tanked oil compressor in my shop for metalworking tools but want to get a small 2 - 4 gallon unit for the woodworking shop in the basement. I have heard oiled units last longer so I want to try and stick with those if they have them for these smaller units. Whats a good unit to get? My price range: $60 - 150 Gallons needed: 2 - 4 Input voltage: 110/120 single phase *If possable, an oil unit as they last longer I normally would just go to harborfreight.com but I never trust anything from them that ill be using and want to last long... I'll be using this compressor to just blow sawdust off the woodworking tools and all every now and then and dont want a motor running all the time...Thats why I like the tank models. *I may get a small nail gun for use on 1/2" plywood that I use in the shop allot though so maby 4G is better. Thanks ADDED NOTE for a nail gun, i was looking at homedepot.com item # BN125A well thanks for the answers............... I got some opinions from people who have used this comp. and its a great unit...nice price too http://www.tptools.com/product.asp?base%5Fno=CH%2D2048&str%5Fbase%5Fno=CH%2D2048%2C&header%5Ftitle=Air+Compressors%2DUnder+5+HP+Electric&page%5Fname=prod%5Flist%5Fdisplay%2Easp&search%5Ftype=L2%7E328&size1=&size2=&gender=&ShowImages=yes&sq=0&cont=1&intPgNo=1&mscssid=VLNMP0ME1BUH9JGHVD47R5QWUGTP45H1 "I swear by Sears Craftsman." yea normally I love buying from them too but looking online their compressors are expensive....I'll have to take a look in store tomorrow and see what they have availabe. Im an electrician and get electrical strippers from them and so if I get mine dull or someone else blows them up I just bring them in for a new pair....its great. I also have an 19.2V drill from them that i have another year on so if I break it they replace it free of charge as well....It's the best drill I have ever used.

In a spot of hot water over Home Surgury practice. Advice? Here's the situation...I practice Home Surgury on low income seniors and people with no health insurance. I do this out of my garage mainly, although will make house visits. My operating instruments are basic woodworking tools, X-acto knives and a Makita cordless drill. I've had pretty good luck... simple procedures like appendectomies, tooth extractions, simple amputations and goiter removals...and would like to branch into knee replacements and gastric bypasses after reading up on a few techniques . Business is good, with only a handful of complications and complaints. While performing a routine gallbladder snip and stitch, I believe the battery from my cordless drill became disengaged and slipped into my patient. I can't find it anywhere (luckily they come with two batteries). I haven't said anything to the patient, but now he complains of pain and swelling, the swelling is in the exact shape of the battery. Should I risk a lawsuit, not really being a doctor? Or keep quiet?
Looking for a certain tool I saw on TV...? About a month ago, I saw a really cool looking woodworking tool on TV. I believe it was from Craftsman. It works just like a PC's printer, except instead of paper, it uses wood. You upload a piece of monochrome clipart, and it routers it onto the plank of wood (I am unclear about the exact details of it). I believe it ran for about $500 or so. I've searched Sears' site high and low, and can't seem to find it. Can someone provide a link, or at very least a name, for this product? Juan : Nope... nothing worthwhile there (except that cake thing... that looks pretty cool...) Shorty : I already did. www.craftsman.com goes straight to Sears' Craftsman dept... and I'd already been there. Tina S : Thank you, that'd be it!
